The film is a black comedy, at times hilarious, tragic, surreal, brutal and uplifting. The film is full of memorable moments such as the chase down Edinburgh’s Princes Street which opens the film I happened to be there when they were filming that scene and Ewan McGregor diving down the “Worst Toilet in Scotland” headfirst. The film doesn’t condemn drug addicts, but it is probably more effective then any amount of preachy moralising as it depicts the devastating consequences that can happen to drug users. The film is well acted by a cast who have mostly become pretty famous since.

If this were not the sequel to what has become one of the best known British films of all time and one of the most highly regarded, at least in its homeland , I would categorize it as a crime movie in which Boyle endeavors to camouflage the meager plot by means of an almost endless supply of stylistic stratagems. How does one make a sequel to a picture whose worth is measured not by its plot, but by the way the plot caught the time in which it was fashioned?

Because the four young protagonists have morphed into men of plus, three of whom are still hooked on hard drugs, it was reasonable to assume that the sequel would exude even more emotion than the original. Boyle tries to reprise this in the sequel, but also purports to deal with issues of growing older and looming old age among a group of characters who never had a future.

“Trainspotting” is not the first movie about heroin — we’ve seen mainlining on the Boyle and Hodge trace that kind of cynicism to an urban tradition dating back.

Welsh made heroin addiction seem filthy, nightmarish and glamorous at the same time. But was Welsh even better than his later success suggests?

His was easily the most startling new voice to emerge in the Nineties, even if it was not to all tastes. And in his determination to confine himself to the seedier side of life, he had a strong example to follow. In , William S Burroughs wrote a semi-autobiographical novel he called Junk , an almost journalistic account of heroin addiction and the culture surrounding it.
